Transformer for Shopping Mall: How to Size and Specify One

A mall is not a factory. The load is lighting, air handling, escalators and tenant fit-out rather than motors starting against a bus. That changes how the rating is arrived at, and it usually changes where the unit has to sit.

What actually drives the rating

The rating comes out of the load list and the diversity applied to it, not out of the floor area. Fit-out loads, kitchen equipment and EV charging points are the three that most often get added late and push the rating up. Ask the design team for the connected load and the diversity they have applied, then check the resulting rating against the board’s fault level.

Indoor or outdoor

Cooling and tapping

AN natural air is the norm indoors; AF forced air gives headroom for peaks if the design calls for it. On the primary side, an off-circuit tap changer with a range of ±2 × 2.5% covers most supply variation. Where the incoming voltage swings more than that, say so at enquiry stage.

What to send with the enquiry

Send the load list and the site constraints and we will come back with a configuration, a footprint and a schedule.

Send us the specification

Rating, primary and secondary voltage, frequency, quantity and the application. We answer within one working day.
