Distribution Transformer Installation: Site Requirements & Steps

Most transformer problems that appear in the first year are installation problems, not manufacturing problems. This guide covers the site requirements and the sequence that avoids them.

It applies to oil immersed and dry type units, indoors and outdoors.

1. Foundation and plinth

Provide a level reinforced concrete plinth sized to the general arrangement drawing, with cable ducts positioned correctly and, for oil filled units, oil containment or drainage where required by local rules.

2. Access and handling

Check the route: door widths, lift capacity, corridor turns, crane or hoist access. Confirm the transformer’s weight and dimensions before delivery, this is one of the most common causes of expensive delays.

3. Clearances and ventilation

Maintain the clearances specified for cooling air and for HV terminal safety. Provide ventilation sized for the continuous heat rejection; in plant rooms this must be part of the mechanical design.

4. Earthing and bonding

Earth the tank or frame and the neutral in accordance with the system earthing arrangement and local regulations. Bond all metallic enclosures and cable screens.

5. Cable termination

Terminate HV and LV with the correct glands, lugs and torque settings. Support cable weight so it is not carried by the bushings. Verify phase sequence and identification.

6. Pre-commissioning checks

Insulation resistance, ratio and vector group check, functional testing of protection and monitoring devices, and a visual check of all connections. Record the results.

7. Energisation

Energise from the HV side where possible, observe inrush, check secondary voltage and phase rotation, then load up progressively while monitoring temperature and noise.

Frequently Asked Questions

Follow the manufacturer’s GA drawing and local rules. As a minimum, keep air paths around radiators or windings unobstructed and respect HV terminal safety distances.

Only if the installation is designed for it. Most radial-clearance requirements exist to allow cooling air and safe access, blocking them shortens life.

A qualified electrical worker following the site’s switching and permit procedure, after pre-commissioning tests are complete and documented.
