Distribution Transformer Factory Inspection: What to Check

A factory inspection is your chance to see the transformer being built and to verify that what you specified is what is being manufactured. It is also where process quality, the part you cannot test for later, becomes visible.

This checklist covers what a buyer or inspector should look at.

Before production

Confirm the approved drawings, the bill of materials, and the material certificates for core steel, conductor, insulation materials, oil or resin. Check that measurement and test equipment is calibrated.

During production

Core building. Lamination quality, step-lap stacking, burr control, core clamping

Winding. Conductor dimensions, insulation application, winding tension, bracing

Assembly. Clearances, lead routing, torque values, clamping

Drying and impregnation. Records of vacuum, temperature and duration

Tanking and finishing. Weld quality, surface preparation, paint system, accessory fitting

Quality records

Ask to see in-process inspection records and how non-conformities were handled and closed out. Traceability by serial number is a good sign of a controlled process.

During testing

Witness the routine tests if your contract allows it: winding resistance, ratio and vector group, impedance and load loss, no-load loss and current, dielectric tests, and functional checks of accessories.

Pre-shipment

Check nameplate data against the order, the completeness of documentation, the condition of bushings and accessories, protection for transport, packing and marking, and that lifting and handling instructions are visible.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most manufacturers accept recognised third-party inspection agencies with advance notice.

Agree the notice period and the test schedule in the contract.
