Oil Immersed Distribution Transformer

In an oil immersed transformer the core and windings are immersed in insulating oil, which does two jobs: it insulates and it carries heat away from the windings to the tank and radiators.
That combination makes oil immersed construction the usual choice for outdoor substations, higher ratings, and any site where good overload capability and long service life matter more than fire-load considerations. Modern sealed designs require very little maintenance over a service life typically measured in decades.

Manufacturing, Testing and Standards
Every unit is built under documented process control and subjected to routine tests before dispatch: winding resistance, voltage ratio and vector group, impedance voltage and load loss, no-load loss and current, applied and induced voltage dielectric tests, and functional checks of accessories. Type tests — including lightning impulse, temperature rise and short-circuit withstand — are available for new designs and project requirements. See our testing and quality control pages.
