How to Select a Transformer for a Hospital?
Hospital power is life-critical. The electrical installation is divided into essential services, operating theatres, intensive care, life support, emergency lighting, and non-essential services that can be shed or delayed.
That division shapes everything about the transformer specification: reliability and maintainability come before first cost.

1. Separate essential and non-essential load
Build two load schedules from the start. Essential load is normally generator-backed and often UPS-backed; non-essential load can be dropped under emergency conditions.
The transformer arrangement must allow essential supply to be maintained during maintenance of any single unit.
2. Build in redundancy
A common arrangement is two transformers, each capable of carrying the essential load, with an automatic changeover scheme and generator backup. The exact configuration follows the applicable healthcare engineering standard and the clinical risk assessment.
3. Specify dry type
Inside a clinical building, cast resin dry type is effectively mandatory: no oil fire load, self-extinguishing, minimal smoke. This matters far more in a hospital than in most buildings because evacuation is slow and difficult.
4. Control noise near wards
Plant rooms near wards, theatres and treatment rooms need an explicit dB(A) limit, anti-vibration mounts, flexible connections and sometimes an acoustic enclosure.
5. Account for imaging and diagnostic equipment
CT, MRI and X-ray equipment present large, short, repetitive loads and are sensitive to voltage dip. Their rating and duty cycle must be part of the sizing study, not an afterthought.
6. Require full documentation and testing
For a healthcare project the documentation package matters: datasheet, GA drawing, test reports, installation and maintenance manuals, and compliance statements for the clinical risk file.
