What Is a Pad Mounted Transformer?
A pad mounted transformer sits on a concrete pad at ground level inside a lockable, tamper resistant steel cabinet. All live parts are enclosed and accessible only with tools, so no fence is required.

Main components
Tank and core. A sealed oil immersed transformer inside the cabinet
HV compartment. Cable terminations, load break switch and fuses
LV compartment. Busbars, terminations and sometimes metering
Cabinet. Lockable, weatherproof, powder coated steel with tamper resistant fixings
Protection. Bayonet or current limiting fuses, surge arresters
Radial vs loop feed
A radial feed unit has one incoming cable. A loop feed unit has two, so it can be switched between sources or isolated for maintenance while the rest of the loop stays energised. Loop feed is preferred for networks where supply continuity matters.
