What Is a Pole Mounted Transformer?
A pole mounted transformer is mounted on an overhead distribution pole and fed directly from the medium voltage overhead line. It is the most economical way to serve scattered or low-density loads where underground cable cannot be justified.

How it works
The unit is a sealed oil immersed transformer, single or three phase, with the primary connected to the MV overhead line through a drop-out fuse and surge arresters, and the secondary feeding the low voltage network or a single installation.
Typical ratings
Pole mounting is limited by pole strength and handling weight, so ratings are lower than for pad mounted units. Check the practical maximum for your market with your supplier.
Protection
Drop-out expulsion fuse. Clears internal faults and overloads; the visible drop-out also indicates operation
Surge arresters. Protect against lightning, which is the main risk for overhead-connected equipment
LV protection. Fused isolator or breaker depending on local utility practice
Advantages
Lowest installed cost per connection in overhead networks, fast installation and replacement, self-cooled sealed design requiring minimal maintenance, and suitability for temporary or mobile applications.
Limitations
Exposure to weather, lightning and vehicle impact; limited rating; visual impact; and dependence on pole condition and strength.
